Dissolving hyaluronic acid filler is a treatment that removes unwanted facial or lip filler. Hyaluronidase is a soluble protein enzyme naturally produced in the body. Hyaluronidase injections are used to dissolve lip fillers that are made from hyaluronic acid. It works by breaking up the bonds that hold the hyaluronic acid molecules (filler) together.

The main indication for the administration of hyaluronidase in aesthetic medicine is the dissolution of an incorrectly administered hyaluronic acid filler. Hyaluronidase enzyme injection is recommended in the following cases:

  • Necrosis of the skin and subcutaneous tissue after hyaluronic acid administration
  • Migration of hyaluronic acid, e.g. above the red lips of the mouth
  • Incorrect administration of hyaluronic acid, e.g. too shallow administration, too deep administration, administration in the wrong place, use of the wrong type preparation
  • Acute allergic reaction or intolerance of the body to the previously administered acid
  • Asymmetry after hyaluronic acid administration
  • Intolerance of the body to the previously administered hyaluronic acid
  • Administration of an excessive amount of hyaluronic acid filler
  • Persistent swelling due to water retention after the filler administration
  • The appearance of lumps and irregularities that cannot be massaged out

What does the hyaluronidase procedure look like?

The hyaluronidase procedure is similar to the hyaluronic acid injection. The skin is disinfected, and then hyaluronidase is injected with a thin needle into the places where we want to dissolve hyaluronic acid. The first effects are visible immediately after the procedure, but usually swelling appears in the injection sites. After it subsides, the final effect of dissolution is visible. Sometimes the procedure needs to be repeated. Hyaluronic acid can be re-administered 2-3 weeks after the hyaluronidase procedure.

Contraindications to the hyaluronidase procedure:

  • Allergy to insect venom (bee, wasp, hornet)
  • Allergy to bovine or sheep protein
  • Skin lesions, e.g. ulcers on the skin surface in the areas undergoing the procedure
  • Fungal, viral or bacterial infections.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
